Rosé accounts for more than 80% of production here, well above any other French wine region. Here’s an overview of the main grape varieties, estates, and appellations that shape the region.

Grenache and Cinsault: the backbone of Provençal rosé

Grenache and Cinsault form the backbone of most Provence rosés. Grenache brings fruit and alcohol content, while Cinsault contributes the pale colour and freshness so typical of the region’s wines. Both grapes ripen slowly in the sun while retaining their acidity, which is what gives the wines their crispness. The combination of long sunshine hours and sea breeze creates conditions rarely found elsewhere in France. The landscape of terraced hills and open pine forest between Hyères and Saint-Tropez shapes the character of the terroir as well.

Syrah and Mourvèdre: structure for reds and rosés

Syrah and Mourvèdre bring structure and depth to the blends. Mourvèdre, the leading grape of the Bandol appellation west of Toulon, ripens late and needs plenty of sun, but in return delivers powerful red wines with real ageing potential, gaining complexity from one vintage to the next. Syrah is often blended with Grenache and contributes aromas of red fruit and spice. Both grapes show their full quality only after several years in the cellar.

Rolle, Ugni Blanc and Clairette: the white grape varieties

Among Provence’s white wines, Rolle (also known as Vermentino), Ugni Blanc, and Clairette dominate. Rolle produces fresh, mineral wines with citrus aromas, while Clairette and Ugni Blanc often contribute structure and freshness to blends. These whites play a smaller role by volume than rosé, but they’re gaining ground in the region, and pair beautifully with our local gastronomy.

Famous estates: from Miraval to Château d’Esclans

Two names in particular have shaped the reputation of Provence wine worldwide. Château Miraval, near Correns and once owned by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, is among the region’s best-known estates far beyond France. Château d’Esclans, near La Motte, is known for its rosé Whispering Angel, one of the best-selling rosés in the world. Both estates show just how much international attention Provence rosé now attracts.

The appellations: Côtes de Provence, Bandol and Coteaux Varois

The AOC Côtes de Provence is by far the region’s largest appellation, spanning tens of thousands of hectares from the hills around Hyères and Grimaud deep into the hinterland. Further west lies the smaller but prestigious Bandol appellation, known for its Mourvèdre-based reds. Inland, around Brignoles, the AOC Coteaux Varois en Provence covers a somewhat cooler climate.

Wine tasting near our campsites

Several Côtes de Provence estates lie just a few kilometres from our campsites on the Presqu’île de Giens.
