On the beer trail

La route de la Bière: discover 3 beers from the Var!

Everyone has heard of Oktoberfest, the beer festival that takes place in Munich over almost a fortnight. However, many people are unaware of the existence of a genuine beer route in France, from the island of Porquerolles to Toulon in the Var. Yet brewery tourism is on the rise. Find out more about these three craft beers brewed in the Var in this article!

La Porquerollaise, the Porquerolles beer

Sail to the island of Porquerolles, which has had its own beer since 2016. Hupaia is a pale ale produced by La Brasserie Porquerollaise. There are four varieties: Hypaea blonde, Hypaea amber, Hypaea white and Hypaea IPA. What’s special about this beer is that it’s truly local! In fact, some hops are grown on the island, and wild herbs are harvested. Fresh and light, Hypaea promises a good start to the beer trail.

Moonshiners, the beer of Giens

Discover “made-to-order” beers from Giens’ production brewery, Moonshiners Kraft Brewery. The temperature of the beer served is 4-7°C.

  • White beer: a light, thirst-quenching beer with fresh citrus notes
  • Lager: a beer with character and flavour
  • Amber beer: a dark, malty, smoky, caramelized beer

Bière des Îles d’Or, the beer of Hyères

Opened in 2015, the brewery now markets seven beers, ranging from the lightest to the Antigel (6.5). The beers are more international (French and Belgian malts, French, German or American hops), but less present with a customer base that’s growing as fast as the family business.

La Bière de la Rade, beer made in Toulon

Let’s end the beer trail in Toulon itself. Visit Brasseur du Sud, the first to serve 100% Toulon beer.

In the Saint-Jean-du-Var district, 7 varieties of beer are produced (between 4 and 5.5 degrees):

  • Censored – blonde
  • La Daurade – white
  • La Murène – stout
  • La Rascasse – American amber ale
  • La Barrac’ – IPA
  • La Torpille – IPA session
  • L’Amer à boire – summer ale

La Bière de la Rade, In addition to on-site refreshments, aperitifs, concerts and aperitif get-togethers, you can also visit the establishment and brew your own beer.
