The Giens peninsula

It is characterized by two types of Mediterranean climate. To the west, the climate is dry and subject to the fury of the Mistral. This is a Marseilles-type climate. To the east, on the other hand, the climate is more humid and subject to the regular blowing of the easterly wind. This is a Nice-type climate.

A master wind, the mistral, which derives from the name “magistral”, strongly dominates all aspects of life on the Giens peninsula. As well as mitigating the summer heatwave, it also provides a prestigious spot at l’Almanarre for windsurfing enthusiasts.
However, the mistral also stirs up fearsome waves that are extremely dangerous for small craft. At the same time, it triggers and spreads fires.

In the coastal scrubland, its mark is immediately visible in the brushcutting of the undergrowth. Tall pines also crawl on contact with it.
These deformations are explained by the chemical burn caused by the salt spray. So it’s not a question of the violence of the push. Only unexposed buds develop. In this way, growth is guided.

From Hyères to Capte, rainfall for the whole year is 750mm, with annual precipitation dropping by around 100mm. This decrease is even greater from Capte to Porquerolles.

The climate in the north-south direction of the Giens peninsula, mainly from the center of Hyères to Giens and the Iles d’Or, is more sunny and warmer.
3000 hours of sunshine a year are recorded in these localities. They are considered to be the sunniest parts of Provence. In fact, in this area, the sky and sea are permanently blue, justifying the name “Côte d’Azur” coined by a prefect a long time ago.
