Port-Cros

clairdelune porc cros

Port-Cros is an island belonging to the Hyères archipelago. Located in the vast Mediterranean, the island was donated to the French government when it promised that, in exchange, a national park would be built there.

This marvellous island in the Golden Islands is sure to please nature lovers, photographers and history buffs alike, thanks to its history and natural heritage.

Port-Cros National Park

Port-Cros National Park was created in 1963 and is now a sanctuary for protected species. The island itself is around 4 km wide, with a total surface area of around 650 ha. The island once belonged to the Greeks, and is a very picturesque place, making it a great tourist attraction.

Port-Cros is a little smaller than Porquerolles, but more mountainous and even more wooded. The small port is guarded by ancient forts above. For a short visit, a 15-20 minute hike from the port to the Fort de l’Estissac offers a superb view of the harbor. Fort de l’Estissac has been beautifully restored and is open to visitors.

It also has a small museum with a well-presented display of local artifacts. There’s a small beach in the bay next to the village/port. A few other beaches are 20-30 minutes away, in either direction. Port-Cros has a very small village area, with tourist stores and cafés rather than typical village stores.

The Port-Cros National Park manages all the natural spaces on the island of Porquerolles, along with the island of Bagaud and neighboring islets. In 1971, faced with the threat of increasing urbanization on the island. In 1985, the State purchased 100 hectares of the island, which became the responsibility of the Parc National de Port-Cros.

What to see in Port Cros National Park?

The Port Cros National Park is governed by strict rules. For example, no camping, smoking or fires are allowed in the park. Mont Vinaigre rises to 194 m and charms visitors with its cliffs overlooking the sea. In the park, you’ll come across a botanical trail, forests, forts and lush green landscapes. The forts that bear witness to Port Cros Island ‘s past have made its reputation:

  • Fort du Moulin, for example, stands 27 m above sea level. It is the largest and oldest fort on the island, built during the reign of François I. It’s impossible to visit this listed building.
  • Fort de l’Estissac stands 105 m above sea level. It is located 15 minutes from the port, at the top of the island’s north-western tip. The port can be visited in summer. It was built on the orders of Richelieu. The fort was listed as a historic monument in 19471. It became part of the Port-Cros National Park in 1974.
  • The Port Man fort is 24 m above sea level. It’s a 2h30 walk from the port. Port Man Fort was built in the 17th century and converted in the 18th century.
