Castellet village
52 km from our Var campsite, come and discover the pretty hilltop village of Le Castellet, overlooking the Provencal countryside planted with vineyards and olive groves.
This fortified medieval village was the setting for Marcel Pagnol’s film “La Femme du Boulanger”. It’s also famous for its motor racing circuit, the Paul Ricard, which hosts the French Formula 1 Grand Prix, a must-see on a camping vacation near Castellet.
The ramparts of the feudal village of Le Castellet are extraordinarily well preserved: access to the walled town is through two fortified gates: the Grand Portal and the Portalet. Then there’s the medieval castle, built in the 11th century and rebuilt in the 15th, the castral village and the parish church of Saint-Sauveur de la Transfiguration, built in the 12th century.
Le Castellet ‘s maze of narrow streets is home to numerous boutiques and arts and crafts workshops. It’s pleasant to lose yourself in the steep, less commercial streets, which are always beautifully decorated with flowers. From its rocky spur, Le Castellet offers exceptional panoramic views of the surrounding vineyards, which can be seen through the many openings in the ramparts. From the esplanade of the feudal castle, the view plunges all the way to the Sainte-Baume massif.
The village offers a wide range of activities, including golf, an adventure course and a horse-riding center. Hiking and cycling trails allow you to discover Le Castellet ‘s scattered hamlets and their small heritage. Honey factories and wineries are also open to visitors.
The Paul Ricard circuit is a must-see site that can also be visited by the whole family, in the company of guides. It’s home to a leisure and activity zone dedicated to driving and thrill sports, with driving simulators, quad rides, a free-fall tower, games and activities for all ages.
