Location of Salins d’Hyères
Let’s talk about its geographical location. The Salins d’Hyères is a remarkable natural site, designated as a “wetland of international importance“. It comprises two sites:
Firstly, Les Vieux Salins: old salt works that run along the coast for almost 3 kilometers to the east of Hyères (Saint-Nicolas district). Visits are free of charge.
Next, Le Salin des Pesquiers is located in the central part of the double tombolo of the Giens peninsula. This site is accessible by guided tour only. From the Route du Sel, you have access to birdwatching observatories.

Biodiversity at the heart of the Salins d’Hyères
Numerous plant and animal species live in the wetlands of the Salins d’Hyères.
Protected flora
What’s more, the Salins d’Hyères is home to a variety of natural environments, including ponds, pine forests and salt meadows. Over 300 plant species have been identified, including the sand lily, orchids and the maritime panicaut. These environments provide an essential habitat for numerous species, enabling biodiversity to flourish. What’s more, these wetlands play a crucial role in ecosystem conservation, helping to preserve protected flora.

Diverse fauna
More than 320 species of birds have been observed. The star of the show is undoubtedly the pink flamingo!
There are also elegant avocets, white stilts, passerines, birds of prey… as well as butterflies, dragonflies, bats…
And, of course, eels, bream, sars…
