A tour of the villages of the Haut Var: Aups & Barjols

Why not take a trip to the Haut Var for a change from the Hyeres coastline? In this article, we’ll introduce you to two villages that are well worth a visit: Aups and Barjols!

The village of Aups

This village in Haute Provence is the capital of black truffles. It’s also not far from Lac de Sainte-Croix and the Gorges du Verdon.

Its architecture is steeped in history and its terroir abounds with authentic products: saffron, honey, virgin olive oil, goat’s cheese, wine and much more!

Aups has been a fairground since the Middle Ages. So you can enjoy two unusual markets: on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. The truffle market opened in early December and will run until the end of March! It’s the biggest market in the Var.

This village of character offers unparalleled architecture. Its historic monuments will delight lovers of medieval history, starting with the Fabrique de l’Abbé Jean, followed by the Château de Taurenne, the Tour de l’Horloge, the sundial and the Collégiale Saint Pancrace.

The village of Barjols

The famous Vallon des Carmes is located in this Provence Verte village. This natural site is accessible from the top of the village. You can’t help but marvel at the spectacle: a succession of waterfalls, fords and cascades of all kinds!

Next, visit the tanneries that have been in the village since the 1950s. Restored by the town, they are gradually being rehabilitated. Finally, visit the 11th-century Collegiate Church, a listed monument.

Visit the village of Barjols and you’ll discover a rich religious history. It’s here that Saint Marcel‘s Day is celebrated , on the Sunday closest to January 17. It’s a feast eagerly awaited by all!
